Counseling

Mental health conditions are common among refugees and asylum seekers who are separated from their families and have experienced persecution and loss. Our counselors speak more than 16 languages and range from licensed counselors to peer support professionals to an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Because so many of our dedicated and experienced staff have walked in the shoes of those we serve, and because we relentlessly pursue the most innovative and effective practices, we have become a national and international leader in how to address the unique challenges that refugees face.

Our Refugee Health Screener-15 (RHS-15), was the first validated screening tool developed for refugees in the United States. The RHS-15 has enabled more than 100 domestic locales and seven international sites to identify refugees in need of support and route them to care.

Walking Together: A Mental Health Therapists Guide to Working with Refugees is a free, downloadable publication that provides information and support to mental health clinics and practitioners that are working with refugee clients.

Compassion is at the heart of all that Refugees Northwest does. Our proven-successful counseling program ensures that effectiveness goes hand in hand with compassion. We combine best practices and research-driven methods with genuine humanity and kindness. We provide training and support to build capacity for other organizations to address the needs of refugees and asylum-seekers. When people have the support they need to adapt and adjust to their new lives, they become more resourceful parents, more skilled employees and more dedicated community members.
